Press release-Christmas Camp 28-30 December 2009

Press Release

The Salesian Brigade of Sliema, formerly known as the Salesian Boys’ and Girls’ Brigade is an organisation within the Salesians of Malta. Its main aim is to lead and teach children and young people the charisma of Don Bosco through various activities such as discipline through drill, music, formation of a corp of drums, the uniform, camping and voluntarism.

2010 is our Centenary year and the Brigade is all set to commemorate in style. A membership drive has already increased the number of members within the organisation. The logo, the name and the new uniform will also give a modern boost to a hundred-year old Brigade. The centenary programme will shortly be advertised in the press.

Today’s activity at Fomm ir-Rih Bay is a beach cleanup in conjunction with a 3-day Winter Camp under tents at Swatar L/O Rabat from the 28th to the 30th of December 2009. 41 campers under the supervision of experienced Brigade officials and leaders will receive training on campcraft, cooking, trekking using compass work and maps, abseiling and first aid. A camp is not a camp without the famous campfire and sing-along’s, BarBQs, nighthikes and a visit to the S.Agatha’s Catacombs in Rabat. A thanksgiving mass will be celebrated on the last day of camp by the Salesian Brigade Chaplain Rev. Fr. Eric Cachia sdb at the S.Agatha’s Chapel. The Salesian Brigade insists on respect towards the SB Colours and flag of Malta through regular flag breaks, early at sunrise and sunset.

The camp theme is “Keep Malta Beautiful” and together with the Mgarr Local Council, the campers and their leaders will give a thorough cleanup of this beautiful and rugged beach. All health and safety measures have been taken under expert supervision. The Malta Red Cross Society will also be present with their ambulance to assist and provide expert training on stretcher work.

The Salesian Brigade thanks all those who have worked hard for this successful event.
